What am I?

Be the first to correctly identify this 'local' organism and you can receive a free dive charter !

In the last newsletter there was a picture of a bearded fireworm.  Hermodice carunculata, is a type of marine bristleworm, ranging in size between 5–10 centimetres (or larger).  When agrivated it will protrude thin white spines. You don't want to touch one of these!

Congratulations to Andy Mortensen.  While we had many correct responses Andy was the first.  It looks like we will see him for some diving aboard the Silver Dolphin.

Discover Local Diving

What? Never done a local dive??? Now the water has warmed up to the upper 60s and will be in the 70s later this month, it's an excelent time to get wet! Now you can Discover Local Diving with us. Come out on one of our weekend charters and we will be happy to put you in the water with a guide that will show you coral, 3 types of sponges, urchins, sea stars, hydroids and much more. If you are lucky you can even see a sea hourse!

Thursday Night Lobster Dives

The last few Thursday evenings have been great! Since this is the height of our lobster season we have been eating well. We have been seeing 2 lb lobsters on average with some alpha males almost 3 lbs!

This is our most popular charter. Even  if you aren't interested in lobsters there is so much cool stuff to see. Did you know we have an incredible amount of bioluminescents?  Just waive your hand through the water and it glitters like fairy dust! At night you can see most fish sleeping and the invertebrates are all out. Things most people don’t know we even have. The corals are feeding at night and the sea cucumbers feed as well. We have beautiful calcareous worms that blossom like purple flowers. My favorite thing is to check out the small schools of squid under the boat.

In fact I am so sure you will like it I will offer a BOGO next Thursday night, July 15th. Buy one get one free charter. Bring a friend!

Capt Saam's Scuba School is a proud supporter of Kayak For a Cause(KFAC).

Kayak for A Cause was created as a way to blend our love of the sport with our commitment to helping good causes. Each year, kayakers join together to cross Long Island Sound and raise money for their favorite charities, most of which work to protect our local waters, environment and community. This year we hope to make a difference for five worthy charities in our community: Save the Sound, Maritime Aquarium, Outward Bound, Builders Beyond Borders, and Canine Companions. Even if you've never picked up a paddle, you can help by supporting our paddlers and donating.

Capt Saam is the On-Water Chase and Safety Leader. Aboard the Silver Dolphin, event Committe Boat, he will over see the passage of  hundreds of kayakers across Long Island Sound with the help of dozens of chase boats. We could use your help. We are always looking for more chase boats and Jet Skis to keep the the pods of kayakers safe!

We will meet off Crab Meadow beach in Hunting NY at 8 AM  on the 24th for check in. we should be finished by 2:30 PM. We offer a $50 gas stipend plus a ticket to the most incredible party that night. Complete with Lobsterbake & Music from Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and Guitar Legend, DICKEY BETTS & Great Southern!!!

Last month's organism was the Diadema antillarum, also known as the long-spined sea urchin, is a species of sea urchin in the Family Diadematidae. It is the most abundant and important herbivore on the coral reefs of the western Atlantic and Caribbean basin. When the population of these sea urchins is at a healthy level, they are the main grazers which prevent algae overgrowth of the reef.

While we had several correct responces Rob Bull was the first. Congratulations Rob! It looks like we will see you for some diving aboard the Silver Dolphin.

Fundamentals of Under Water Navigation!

If you have ever done local diving or gone night diving you know the challenges you may be confronted with. One of which is finding your way back to your entry point. Or maybe finding your way to a wreck or a reef. Either way you don't just point your finger and say it's over there. You will need your compass and a timing device to do it right. Have you used a compas to navigate? Sometimes you can get by using landmarks.

Come sit in on this FREE lecture and get a new prospective on getting where you want to go and back. We will also have a drawing for a free night dive charter!

We will begin at 6:30PM on Wednesday May 12th.

 Rescue Diver Techniques

May 25th – 30th

This specialty is for anyone who wants to become a more responsible SAFE diver or intends on going to become a SCUBA diving leader, such as Divemaster, Assistant Instructor, or Instructor. The material covers the causes, effects, and treatments of diving related accidents, diving physiology, psychological aspects of diving, diving first aid, activation of EMS, and how to avoid and manage diving accidents. These topics will be presented in the classroom, in the pool, on a boat, and on the beach. Requires one pool session, one half day beach/boat teach, four three hour classroom and boat lectures.

This course trains divers in the knowledge and skills needed to manage risks and effectively handle limited in-water problems and diving emergencies. Cressi Travelight BC

 cressitravellight

This jacket has been specifically designed for those who travel by plane as it is the result of painstaking research on the most suitable materials for reducing weight to a minimum.

Nothing has been left to chance in the search to achieve a record weight, beginning with the choice of the material, a 210 denier nylon which is light yet very strong.

The back is soft and padded and has a rear rubber area with a strong grip and a double strap to safely block the tank.

Two generous zip up pockets allow stowing of even bulky accessories.

On the back of the jacket two lead pockets allow for perfect distribution of the weights between these pockets and the Lock Aid integrated weight system.

The control for the rear release valve has been placed at the front, on the lower right hand side of the jacket.

Travelight can be folded up in just a few seconds and fastened with a special retractable strap so that it can be stowed easily in its own carrying bag, which has a shoulder strap.

Travelight’s very light structure and its anatomical shape make it a very tight-fitting and streamlined jacket once underwater and it offers very little resistance to forward movement.

Fundamentals of Under Water Navigation!

compassj

If you have ever done local diving or gone night diving you know the challenges you may be confronted with. One of which is finding your way back to your entry point. Or maybe finding your way to a wreck or a reef. Either way you don't just point your finger and say it's over there. You will need your compass and a timing device to do it right. Have you used a compas to navigate? Sometimes you can get by using landmarks.

Come sit in on this FREE lecture and get a new prospective on getting where you want to go and back. We will also have a drawing for a free night dive charter!

We will begin at 6pm on Wednesday May 12th.

SCUBA Helping to Rehab Wounded Soldiers and You Can Help Too!

Last year,  CPT Tony Benedosso, Commander of the Warrior Transition Unit (WTU) in Schweinfurt Germany. Their mission is to assist soldiers wounded in Afghanistan and Iraq and to restore normalcy and hope to their lives.  All these soldiers have experienced traumatic injuries, many have lost limbs due to IEDs.  The use of SCUBA diving is providing a remarkable form of therapy to these soldiers as they explore a new and unknown underwater world.  Tony’s brother, Patrick a junior at Fairfield Prep High School, has been fundraising to support this program and through the generosity of several local donors, has raised $4000 to date.  This has allowed the WTU to conduct diving sessions for over 50 Soldiers. Their ultimate goal is to assist all their Soldiers in becoming certified and taking them on dive trips to nearby lakes in Croatia, Egypt and Italy.

Here is where you can help . . . Bob Boehringer, a long time diver and owner of www.SoundChoicePower.com an energy broker for Discount Power Inc, (DPI) is helping out by contributing $25 for each family that chooses to switch from Connecticut Light & Power (CL&P) or United Illumination (UI) to Discount Power as their electricity supplier.  Connecticut deregulated their electric industry 10 years ago, but only recently have licensed electric suppliers started to drive down the price.  By switching to DPI, you will not only save 10 to 20% on your electric bill each month, but also help support our Soldiers overseas.  For more info  www.SoundChoicePower.com or contact Bob directly at 203 952-6495.

  Thank you for your support!
